The Runner

Step by step
Breath by breath
Rubber on concrete
What is next?

His head it turns
His eyes they scan
Lungs that swell
What’s the plan?

Step by step like day by day
Paths that twist and turn and stray
But which way?

His heart is racing
His pulse in his shoulders
The sun is descending
The winds blowing colder

There are others, he sees
They run on their own
Chasing down secrets
But not quite alone
Looking for home

He meets roads less traveled and busy thoroughfares
Yet his journey, his route, is unique
Passing lakes, climbing mountains, onto empire stairs
What is it I seek?

He stops
He thinks
This is a good run, I’d say
Then it’s step by step like day by day
